Also, you can cherry-pick all the outliers you want, but the teams with the biggest payrolls — on average — dominate the league.

11 of the 12 most recent AL and NL pennant winners are among the top 10 payrolls — all except Tampa Bay.

The Royals were a fluke and have reverted back to their mean, reaching the playoff every 30 years or so.
