conference and even national titles, as we've seen twice over the past 12 years (2007, 2013).
In general, we can expect to have a top 10 team once or twice per decade, if we have a good coach. That gives fans something to hope and cheer for every year.
In a landscape that allows pay-for-play "endorsement deals" however, we would NEVER compete for a national, conference, or even division title.
We would have virtually no chance of landing top 250 recruits in football, or top 50 recruits in basketball.
Our average media markets, average fan base, and average network of donors/boosters could not compete in the bidding wars and endorsement opportunities of schools like Texas, Texas A&M, LSU, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Michigan, Ohio State, Florida State, Clemson, Oregon, USC... and probably 10 or 15 other schools.
Not only that, our best players (the so-called "diamonds in the rough") would transfer out to more "lucrative" programs (i.e. those with richer boosters, media markets, and endorsement deal opportunities).
You think the playing field isn't level now?.. Just wait until pay-for-play is allowed.
It would be the end of major college sports for most schools.
