-athletes to be paid for their "name, image, and likeness" via endorsement deals, etc. (as mandated by the "Fair Pay-to-Play Act" passed by California's state senate yesterday)...
How would you prevent deep-pocket boosters from bribing recruits with so-called "endorsement deals" that are nothing more than pay-for-play agreements? How could Mizzou compete for top recruits when billionaire boosters at schools in Texas and California are able to outbid everyone else with their "endorsement" payouts?
UT booster: "Pick UT and you'll get a $100K 'endorsement deal' after signing day."
5* recruit: "Thanks but an A&M fan is offering me $150K to endorse his car dealership."
UT booster: "Okay, give me 48 hours, I'll see what I can do..."
That's what recruiting will become if players can receive endorsement deals.
Also, allowing endorsement deals will further incentivize recruits to play at schools with the biggest fan bases, in the biggest media markets. It would become virtually impossible for schools like Mizzou to compete against schools like Ohio State, Alabama, and Texas for top recruits, further widening the talent gap. As the NCAA correctly stated about this matter: "[it] would fully upend the balance of national competition in college sports."
Look, I hate the NCAA as much as anyone else, but in this case they're absolutely right: It would ruin college sports.
