I wouldn’t be opposed to a much smaller department that would primarily be a resource for the states. Let them set core standards (which would have nothing to do with social justice) for both students and teachers, that states can choose to use or not. If they choose lower standards, let those states justify that to their citizens.
The department can be a resource for teaching practices, survey data, uses of technology, standardized tests, teacher tools, best practices, etc.
It should only exist to assist the states in improving the education of their kids.
