Haith freed a group of offensively minded players that had been together 4 years from the limitations of Mike Anderson's style of play. So we had a some success that first year but his following teams were (as another poster put it) somewhat of a house of cards.
Haith was a questionable hire in the first place and I do think his overall tenure and manner of his departure pushed Alden to yield to those "blue-haired donors". Had M Anderson not left until 2010, I doubt if Mizzou would have ever hired K Anderson. A transition to a more capable coach would have occurred. Unfortunately, the prevailing thought among some donors was "I told you so; now hire K Anderson".
Secondly, I think being in the sec does hurt attendance in basketball. Hard to get a good gauge on that because we haven't been that great since we joined but without real rivalries that will sell out every time; it's tough to get the fans to Columbia on a regular basis. Not playing KU alone deprives Mizzou arena of guaranteed sellout every year.
