Norm had us up there for a good 15 years, started to decline in mid 90s, but then went out on a decent season including an epic win at Lawrence. As an indication of our status, Bill Self and Quin Synder interviewed for the job. Little or no blame is to be placed on Norm. He put together a good season and then stepped down when asked.
1st mistake - Quin Synder. He was a top candidate at the time, and time has demonstrated that he is, or has grown into being, a good coach. But he was never a good fit for a midwestern college town. This should have been figured out during the interview process. Bill Self was obviously the better fit, but Mizzou went for the shiny hire.
2nd mistake - not keeping Mike Anderson, and then going "all in" with Matt Painter with no good plan B.
3rd mistake - Frank Haith. If there was ever a time that Kim Anderson could have got something going, it was Frank Haith's first year of inherited seniors. Probably would have fizzled due to KA's lack of charisma anyway, but hiring KA after the Haith decline had no chance of success. By the time Haith's teams were losing in the first round of NIT, it was over.
I don't really count Kim Anderson or Cuonzo Martin as mistakes. The damage had already been done. Who could we have brought in that was better than either of them for Mizzou at the time? Especially with Martin - i get that he had a demonstrated track record of mediocrity at several schools, but how else could they have pulled in the Porters? It may have been a long shot, but it was a chance worth taking. It didn't pan out, and we need to move on, but I don't blame the AD for putting that deal together.
How to get out of the hole - stop trying to quickly get out of the hole with some strategy hire. There isn't going to be a miracle. We need to look at Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kansas State, Iowa, Iowa State, S. Carolina...big state schools that will never be "destination" colleges for big time recruits, but who hire for competency. And once they have a competent coach, they keep him around. No, they won't make the tourney every year or make headlines with 5 star recruits. But they lock down the in-state players and build programs. Every 3 or 4 years they have a legitimately good team.
