but I don't recall him rising to a level above others and being denoted as the preferred candidate. Mike was a more proven program builder and that was an important consideration. Beilien had certainly had two reasonably good seasons in back to back years right before that point but mostly an undistinguished track record before that.
I'm not saying he wasn't possibly the preferred candidate of the committee at that point, but I don't recall that being the case. MU was involved in considerable controversy, on major probation, and Quin had essentially cratered the program while quitting in the middle of the season because he was no longer on speaking terms with our AD. It wasn't a very good environment to try and hire a head coach into.
