some extent a simpleton. You can identify that pretty quickly in a press conference or interview, and his premise is doing his approach better than you can and inflict his will upon you rather than trying to adjust to anything you are doing or tailoring his approach to the roster at hand. If he has compiled an ideal roster he will have success, if he has a non-ideal roster he will struggle, and either way he will approach it in nearly the same fashion.
He doesn't get buried in this profession because a good number of his counterparts are also relative simpletons. It becomes a big distinguishing factor when your coach is what would normally be considered 'smart'. The problem currently facing AD's is 'smart' people also often have a crude understanding of how basketball works, so they apply their intelligence incorrectly and it results in a bunch of invalid conclusions or they have difficulty getting buy in because they can't establish credibility. Finding that right balance is rare, but those candidates are who will likely succeed from what appears to be out of nowhere.
