He signed a letter of intent, which covers only the first year (and scholarships are for one year, but renewable), and he played his freshman year at Mizzou. You could say he reneged only if he didn't show up for his freshman season.
After that, he had the right to transfer just like anyone else. Mizzou went on probation, and he preferred to go to Kentucky. As a Mizzou fan, I've never liked that, particularly with his reaching the Final Four at UK, but that doesn't lead me to disparage his character.
Transferring out of a program that has been put on probation seems just as justifiable as leaving a program after a coaching change. I suspect you'd view it that way, too, if it didn't involve the program you love and a program you love to hate.
