Why would a mediocre "Power 5" team want to play a road game at an elite team's place? Wouldn't it be better to play a road game against a school it has a chance to beat?
I think the subconscious or suppressed fear is that one would have to admit that the alleged mediocre team isn't as mediocre as you would like them to be.
Road wins, wherever they occur, add to the RPI. It isn't just the elite teams.
When SLU was near its pinnacle (so far) in 2013-14 and Wichita State won at Chaifetz, you think the NCAA Committee gave that no credence? As I recall, SLU got a #5 that year after getting a #4 the year before (not to mention that SLU could've and probably should've won that game and probably would've if someone other than Jim Crews were the coach, but that's another discussion). Mizzou folks weren't chattering then about how SLU is "mediocre."
You just don't want to wake up and discover that SLU is an equal or could actually get to a Final Four before Mizzou. That — in my opinion — is why Mizzou fans keep talking down SLU's program, bad-mouthing Travis Ford and accusing him of paying players, and pining away for SLU's best recruits and hanging out the notion that Martin can flip him — with his pinky! — if he wants him.
