180° swing in Kenpom "luck" from last year to this year...

Last season, I pointed out numerous times that the team was an extreme statistical outlier in the "luck" metric modelled by Kenpom (#10 out of 363 D-1 teams), suggesting the team was not as good as its record indicated. Furthermore, the team had an historically easy schedule.

This season, the team is once again an extreme statistical outlier – but in the opposite direction, ranking #351. From top 10 to bottom 10 of nearly 360 D-1 teams.

So conversely, and in fairness to Gates, this year's team is likely a lot *better* than its record suggests.
