Imagine an alternate possibility to what has already been proposed…
It has been suggested that the SEC and the Big Ten might lead the major conferences in a break away from the NCAA were they operate under a no holds barred system of unlimited budget, paying players, etc.
What if they led that breakaway and instead of setting up a no holds barred system, they established a new system where they absolutely cracked down on all of this run away money and made it truly about student athletes like it used to be.
It would actually be better for everybody at every level of the system. Keep the kids that don’t really want to be in college out and send them to the G league or some sort of minor-league system. Return college athletics to being played by college students who also happens to be good at sports. You would lose some of the most elite players from the college system, but the number of kids that you would lose would actually be pretty small and with kids sticking around in college, the quality of the product would actually improve over time.
