Having this old school French/New Orleans architecture and vibe in an otherwise Chicago/rust belt area is a fascinating blend. And I love getting to eat fusion sh** like andioulle and crawfish toasted ravioli or the funky slinger at Rooster etc. Minus the BBQ, what STL still has in spades that KC doesn't have as much of is old school quirky cultural stuff that, if we could all just enjoy it safely together, would be fun cross-cultural experience.

Snoots. Rib tips. St. Paul sandwiches. Gooey butter cake. Second largest Mardi Gras in the country. STL pizza with provel-mozz blend instead of pure provel so the haters can get over it and enjoy. Lots of good breweries and a long beer culture tradition. Bosnians doing Bosnian things.

Roper's Ribs has every right to be as iconic as Gates or Arthur Bryant's but the sad reality is even the people who live right next to it are in constant threat, let alone trying to draw customers from around the state or nation. And that's sad cuz it should be a Missouri icon.

The answer is as straightforward as it is impossible. A unified St. Louis County-STL City property tax base would launch STL metro area into one of the most dynamic areas in the Midwest overnight. St. Louis was one of the top 10 metro areas in the U.S. for almost 100 years for a reason, it has that ability when not divided and killing itself. The play made by Kansas City MO of aggressively annexing huge swaths of property tax base to the north and south is a big part of whey they could revitalize the downtown. At some point STL County has to come to grips with the reality they are symbiotic with STL City and follow suit. I know it won't happen, but honestly the Missouri economy as a whole really needs it to.
