In the 16 years of the BCS, 15 teams played in the championship game, so 15 teams filled 32 available slots. It was pretty different every year with very few teams playing in consecutive years. Bama was the ONLY repeat champion in two consecutive years, and it only happened once.

In the 7 years of the CFP, only 11 teams filled 28 available slots. But only 4 teams have played on the championship game. Yawn.

Below you said the pre BCS era was before your time. That explains a lot. You know nothing.
