I will never understand the mentality for paying college

athletes. I get that the NCAA and schools benefit from their skills but it's no different than accepting a position at a company for benefits and a salary but losing control over your intellectual contributions. If you develop software for your company, you don't get to market that software independently during your tenure or after you leave.
College players have a contract where they are given a free education, room and board in exchange for their participation in the college athletic program. Some of them further benefit by attending a school their resume would have never otherwise allowed them to attend. I don't see how that's any different than a worker who loses control over their intellectual property while working for a company in exchange for a salary and benefits.
