25 years ago, and the popularity of CFB grew immensely over that time.
The only substantial difference between the CFP and BCS is a 4-team playoff instead of 2.
The non-playoff bowls (i.e. "BCS bowls" and "NY6 bowls") are just as irrelevant now as they were prior to the 4-team playoff.
With a 12-team playoff, teams like Mizzou will actually have a chance to play in a meaningful post-season game (unless NIL + transfer free-agency make it impossible).
