Let me preface this with I am of the firm belief he inherited the worst and most challenging rebuild in modern college basketball history among programs who actually care about men's basketball. It was a complete disaster and I don't think it was realistic to expect him to rebuild MU back to a normal level in only 4 seasons.
1. He has a 13 year track record, and at most he has 1 'good' season of a 3rd place PAC12 finish, earned 4 seed in the tourney but lost in the first round to Hawaii, and won 23 games overall. Beyond that he really has no seasons that would equate to a 'good' season at MU. He is a slightly below average coach.
2. For several years he was saddled with the albatross of Michael Porter Sr's contract that ate up a sizable portion of his assistant budget and produced very little coaching or recruiting help. When finally unburdened, he replaced him with an underqualified long time friend and has shown no indication of turning over any of the other assistant positions despite considerable falloff in recruiting and an overall poor product on the court.
3. For 3 years now the ongoing pattern has been a multitude of poor outside shooters consistently taking low percentage shots. Not only has no steps been undertaken to correct for this, it is obviously by design and is encouraged.
4. While this is obviously a feather in his cap, to me this may be the most damning in terms of future prospects....During his 4 seasons at MU he has identified and had the good fortune to coach:
- A transfer from Canisius who turned into a 1st team all SEC player
- A transfer from Granger JUCO who went there not due to academics but because it was his best basketball offer who turned into a 2nd team all SEC player
- A transfer from Evansville who turned into a 1st team all SEC player
- A top 50 caliber big with legit size/strength/build/athleticism who could run the court and score with his back to the basket that played 4 seasons of college ball....the most rare commodity in modern college basketball
And he basically didn't do anything with it. Certainly kudos to him for identifying and bringing those players along, but that is not a repeatable format or something that can be reasonably relied upon to be duplicated. Many coaches can go entire career without such good fortune.
5. Our roster in its current state is probably in the worst shape as it has been in almost any period in modern MU history.
The team we just saw at MU is most likely going to be Cuonzo's most talented team at MU. I think we know conclusively he is not the caliber of coach who can rise above not having enough talent, and I don't think he can recover from a momentum perspective and isn't surrounded with enough recruiting assets to have enough talent to offset his coaching deficiencies.
