NFL teams are not required to spend the same amount on roster payrolls. Yes, there is a salary cap and as far as actual payroll you are correct.

But NFL players are free to go out and get their own endorsement deals, and many of them do. Some make as much or more on endorsements as they do from their team salaries.

NIL money equates to these private endorsement deals, just like is done in the NFL.

For the record, I think NIL is an even worse idea than the playoff and will completely kill the game within 10 years for all intents and purposes. The playoff has almost finished it off already, this will end it. It will for me at least.
