and undergrad research assistants doing research that pays for the universities? All they get from it is experience and a good reference. Just like college athletes.

No one is forcing them to go to college. They go for the same reason we all went, to prepare us for our chosen career fields. The main difference is that I paid tens of thousands of dollars to get a job that payed $30k. The athletes you are talking about pay nothing for an education that will net them millions.

Sorry I don’t buy this argument.
