I agree that there is no obvious choice currently to supplant Giest. And I agree with your point that losing Harris was a huge step back and detriment to the rebuild. This is going to come off negative but its not meant to be and I was very impressed with the development Geist made last year and he was considerably better than I expected he had the capacity to be.
But other than Vanleer he is by far the worst semi-regular starter at MU since the 1970's (I don't know what I can fairly assess that statement going back into the 1970's). You could make a case for Dibi Ray who started about half the games his senior year and was worse, or for Chip Walther who started like 9 or 10 games his senior year but he was a walkon. Either of those players it was extremely easy to find a supplanting replacement for.
And its not that Geist didn't play well, he exceeded his potential by a good margin and did better than expected. Given that it was by far our biggest weakness last year, to go into the next season without addressing some solution that doesn't give you an obvious choice for supplanting him is entirely negligent. In terms of SEC caliber players he is essentially a walkon, and we couldn't find someone who is an obvious choice to supplant him?
Barring some unexpected amazing development we are going to be sitting here at years end talking about how limited and poor the pg play was and how it crippled our ability to do anything.
