He was literally the one the spotlight was on during the investigation, and now has to put his reputation back together. He has everything to gain by lying, playing into the fans' desires for what the investigation was, and looking like the hero who was maligned by the PC left for just cursing a little too much.

Regardless of whether he's telling the truth or not, you have absolutely no way of knowing if he's telling the truth.
