If in fact he told EE in mid-March to 'start looking for another job', it reveals him not just to be a craven liar in the subsequent statements he made over the next few months about the squeaky clean integrity of his 'program review'. It indicates that he had it out for EE, decided to fire him, then went about constructing a case for it. I'm sure complaints were made about EE, that's obvious based on everything that happens. But most college programs would deal with that another way, not go thermonuclear like Mack did.
It's just a guess on yours or my part, but my informed guess is the same as yours - the roots of Macks motivation very likely can be traced back to the football debacle in November 2015. EE alluded to his feelings about the football protest and how it made him feel as a Mizzou fan who loves the university. He clearly was not a fan of how Mack handled that situation, and neither were a number of the girls on the softball team. And that certainly came to Macks attention. No one likes to be called a fool in public or in private. And MR certainly was aware of the disdain with which EE held him in over that disgraceful situation.
