and we want others to do well. we want others to not have to pay for college 20+ years later. we want the lower class to not be as low, and not make low class choices in life.

some can make it out of poor situations, most can't. and it's not a matter of 'just work hard, and pull up those boot straps' -- that's a naive ideal. if you grow up in a low class situation, you tend to make those type of decisions in life. if we can limit that - even a little - society as a whole will be better.
