Yes, but they are not paying this player. That is what is so messed up about this. They are paying for an endorsement deal. They are not supposed to be paying the guy to play for Mizzou. If the endorsement deal is a legitimate endorsement, it shouldn't matter where he plays. If Machen's wanted a star QB from Hickman to do commercials for them, but the kid went to Tennessee or something, would that be OK?
Endorsement deals shouldn't be contingent on the kid attending any particular school. Period. That's pay for play. The number of actual legitimate endorsement deals in the NIL universe is very small.
The way your Machens deal should work is they donate the money to the school and the school uses that money to pay players. In return, players would "earn" that pay by doing some commercial or something for Machens. Basically, the AD would contract with Machens for $XXX and in return the AD will provide players for commercials, appearances, etc. Then the AD/coach would decide how much each player gets based on all the contracts they can put together. That's how you have local businesses participate, while still keeping every out in the open instead of behind closed doors like it is now. Then the AD/coach would decide how much each player gets based on all the contracts they can put together.
