being (not that it could) entirely self-sufficient. I'm in favor of understanding the strategic implications (costs) of chasing low-priced goods.

I agree it is not sustainable and the US had better damned will be prepared to produce things in more balance with consumption, just as China is best served by allowing its citizens to build wealth and to consume (they are harder to control, however, than a poorer population).
