There are some things that need to be protected at home. However, given this global economy, there will always be rich nations and poor nations. The US never has been, and never will be JUST a consumer economy.

Also, need to think beyond just manufacturing. The skillsets needed for a rich economy have changed, no longer are they based on manufacturing. Tech skills have taken over, which is why China has stolen technology over the years and leveraged it to make their own money. The US will always be a leader in tech evolution. I'm really not worried about it, as long as the US government supports a relatively free capitalism economy.
