proactive to prevent it from escalating the way it did... but it was impossible to forsee the football team getting involved.

As FMB said, hindsight is 20/20.

I'm more interested in what you think their response should have been after the football team got involved and it blew up into a national story.

There wasn't much you could do to diffuse the situation at that point, other than what MU did. It was a no-win situation.
