He and Wolfe do a sitdown with the protesters (Butler, et. al.), bring in Chuck Henson (what Mike Middleton did) and bring in the cameras. Let them make their points, then refute them one by one. which is what Middleton and Henson did:

What complicated things at this point was Wolfe and Loftin caring more about getting each other fired than actually doing their jobs. Wolfe didn't want to give Loftin a lifeline and didn't think anything from the situation would blow back on him. That is, until the KC & homecoming incidents occurred.
