Reducing “Rough play” and creating freedom of movement.
The result was they now call fouls for hand checks. A true hand check does not impede the offensive player. If it does, it is not a hand check, it is a hold or a push. If they would focus on the true holds and pushes and ignore the love taps, the game would be greatly improved.
The other issue is the secondary defender rule, which has become completely misapplied.
None of these changes have succeeded in reducing contact on the basketball court.
In fact it has achieved exactly the opposite. We now, more than ever, reward offensive players for trying to create contact. If we would stop calling fouls and rewarding those guys for flying into traffic, they would eventually stop flying into traffic causing all of the contact
