The infection fatality rate would be the % of everyone who is infected with it who dies.
The IFR seems more important to me. It gives a better gauge of herd immunity. Once about 50% to 60% of the people have been infected... or immunized, the # of people infected at any given time will start to drop... and will continue to drop regardless of any social distancing or whatever.
Knowing just the case fatality rate alone doesn't give you any idea of how many people already have immunity.
