Even if it was built on the backs of FCS and G5 schools, he knew that getting his team to winning records was going to create a lot of momentum.
I have two big issues with Pinkel and that will always be his legacy to me:
(1) He was normally outcoached in games against Top 25 competition. We had chances to beat UT and OU more than the one time per school that he recorded but in those close games he rarely could muster game plans that put himself in a position to win.
(2) When things would continuously NOT work against an opponent, he never stepped in and took control. As some examples:
Navy in 2009.
Our SEC opener hosting UGA. How many times did Jenkins come in unopposed? Couldn't chip the dude with a slot or TE?
Our game against USCe in 2012 where they kept throwing those mid-range passes to WIDE OPEN receivers.
The 3rd and goal to go situations without EVER installing a big run package because the 5-wide worked so well to spread the field up to that point. How many seasons of this did we put up with?
He was a good enough coach to put us in position to gain national attention but in 2010 Kirk Herbtreit put it best when he said something like : "I'm not buying Mizzou. We see this all the time. They play no one and then fold when they finally do have to play someone."
He wasn't wrong. We always played nobodies in OOC play and sadly that hasn't changed much.
