(1) Getting us into the SEC.
(2) Proving that we could win in the SEC.
I've criticized Pinkel for various things, but those are major accomplishments.
He elevated the program and put it on the map with a #1 ranking and four (4) conference title game appearances (two in the Big 12, two in the SEC). He gave MU a respectable football program, and I'm not sure the SEC would have invited us without the success we had in the Pinkel era.
Unfortunately, the events of 2015 will tarnish his legacy, but I don't think he should be blamed for it as much as he is. It was a "perfect storm" caused by a deceived player who put himself before the team (J'Mon), a rich disingenuous student (Butler), a rogue and politically-motivated faculty member (Click), and several incompetent high-ranking administrators (Wolfe and RBL). Pinkel was placed between a rock and a hard place and did what he thought was best for the football program. It was a no-win situation for him caused by students, players, and a few admins that are no longer with the university, thankfully.
I hope the fans that continue to hold a grudge against Pinkel can recognize that and appreciate the good things he did for the university and football program.
