I think private medical care is great because of all the boilerplate competition stuff. I think that should be maintained.
However, uncontrolled, we've seen costs go up at an insane amount.
I would suggest a government regulated healthcare industry where procedures are coded and have cost controls set by regulators. An MRI should cost $300 (or whatever is determined to be profitable and reasonable) everywhere you go in America.
Malpractice insurance should be reduced by implementing tort reform at an aggressive rate. Costs should be punitive and reasonable, but not outrageous. Again, something to be determined by regulators.
Health insurance itself isn't a major waste, health insurance margins are actually very low. It's my hope that cost regulation should reduce premiums.
If someone doesn't have health insurance, they should be cared for. Bills would (hopefully) be less expensive due to cost regulation. Uninsured people should have income over a certain amount (say 2x poverty level) taxed at a higher rate to pay into a pool that reimburses healthcare providers for lost revenue due to uninsured people for a reasonable amount of time to encourage people to purchase insurance.
That's just my random thoughts from years ago.
