circumstances such as the following:
Someone doesn't like the police and when they are called in to a volatile crowd situation to try and keep the peace this person begins taunting them, as are others around him. He gets up to the barrier & starts cussing them out. They stoicly stand their ground.
Some of the protesters begin pushing on the barriers, and the police are pushing them back. The person in question feels that his shouting is falling on deaf ears and grabs a flag pole and begins waving it around above his head, just on the other side of the barriers from the police. That gets their attention & puts them on higher alert, but he hasn't totally threatened them yet & they are still remaining on their side of the barrier.
After a while he begins to feel a little frustrated again that he isn't doing enough and begins spitting on them. They warn him and others that they are crossing the line & will face consequences if this keeps up. This only eggs them on all the more and they begin throwing harmless things at them... wads of paper, small boxes that won't harm them. The police are showing more irritation and are pulling night clubs and warning them more forcefully, but the protesters continue to escalate. More and more people are crowding in and pushing the barriers. Some are throwing a little bigger and heavier objects. Those pushing on the barriers are more aggressive and a few that try to break through to the other side are pulled through and arrested, inciting the crowd even more.
Organizers are bringing more flag poles, some of which have been sharpened, and some in the crowd are pointing them menacingly at the police.
At some point things escalate even further and the police announce that the rally is no longer peaceful and that it is time to break it up and everyone needs to go home. The crowd gets even more boisterous and begins throwing firecrackers over the barriers at the police. A bottle or two or three fly in their direction. Some are hit. The police throw some tear gas canisters into the crowd while announcing that the party is over, people need to disperse. But they in turn throw the tear gas canisters back at the police. Some in the crowd push the police and things get even more out of hand.
Our intrepid protester pushes back one of the barriers and is smacked on the arm with a billy club. He grabs the club and fights with the policeman for it, but losing that battle turns & runs as other police come to their colleague's aid. They chase him down and beat him as other police all around are having similar experiences as they start grabbing and arresting people in the crowd. Rocks and bricks are thrown. Things get more and more violent.
"Our protester" is beaten and arrested, carted off to jail. He suffers some significant injuries.
Were the police justified in what they did to him?
Perhaps not, but the protester was a dumbsh*t that brought his injuries upon himself. Had he acted rationally and given respect where it was due, he would never have been injured.
