I understand that, for many, being a sports fan is the most important thing to them. I can't argue that.
I used to be a fanatic, but life has changed me along the way. Part of it is the politics of it, as nowadays you can't just watch the game, you have to also put up with the political messages of the players, coaches and/or networks. I hate that and it takes away from the game for me.
But the biggest reason I take a different perspective now is that I lost a few people close to me that were huge fans of a few teams. All they talked about most of the time. If you stopped by they were always watching their teams, wearing their sweatshirts or t-shirts, flying their flags out front, team memorabilia all around. When one of them was about to die, they asked me to see that they were buried in their team's jersey. That is when it dawned on me that being a sports fan in this country has reached unhealthy levels. A moment of clarity. Even when facing death, it was the most important thing to them. More important than even their own eternal salvation.
Now I love watching the games, but I look at them differently. These games are to be enjoyed, but there are far greater things in life.
One day we will all be judged for our time here on earth, and God will not care what jersey we are wearing. Because it isn't important.
