been playing with matches in the garage as a kid & a gas can blew up dousing him in flames. They didn't think he would live.

Jack Buck heard about it and would come to the hospital and talk to him, encouraging him to hang in there. The kid was a big Cardinals fan and it was a tremendous inspiration for him to hear Jack Buck speaking to him.

He said he heard the nurses talking about how Jack Buck had gone out into the hallway and cried after he had seen how badly burned this young boy was. But he kept coming back. He also spoke encouraging words to him during broadcasts and they always had the radio on for him in his room.

He beat the odds and did live, though he lost at least one leg & perhaps an arm, maybe more. When he had recovered enough Jack Buck came in his limo to pick him up and take him to the ballpark. He let him sit in the booth with them and talked with him a little on air and maybe let him call a pitch or two.

I forgot most of the story, but that young man was greatly touched by the kindness that Jack Buck had shown to him.
