purely by accident.
Growing up as a Cardinals baseball and SLU basketball fan, I turned on the old radio in my parent’s basement that I had left dialed to KMOX for the then completed 1965 MLB season. The sound was of a crowd that sounded much more savage than baseball fans. I recognized Harry Caray’s distinctive voice, and he was as excited as I can ever remember, almost as crazed as when the Cards had won the pennant in dramatic fashion the year before.
It turns out that Tiger QB Gary Lane had made a huge gain and almost scored against Nebraska on the previous play and the FB had just scored a TD to put MU up 13-0. I listened to the rest of the game and even though the bugeaters won 16-14, I was hooked as a Mizzou fan.
We’ve been blessed with some great announcers in the past, like Harry Caray, Jack Buck, Mahlon Aldridge, Dan Kelly, John Kadlec, and Bill Wilkerson, who made some memorable calls over the years, but, sad to say, Mike Kelly blew a golden opportunity last Saturday to add to the list.
