That's why we spend how many hours a week thinking and writing and arguing about it OUTSIDE of actual 'game time'.
That's why millions of fans assemble every Saturday for just their 'inconsequential' little individual programs.
That's why sixteen programs can get together and each program playing 12 game schedules, providing a very limited number of hours of entertainment drive ESPN contracts in the BILLIONS.
Be honest, what do you take more seriously, your day-to-day job or the fate of your Missouri Football Tigers.
If you got every promotion and raise you wanted how would your feeling about that compare to the feeling of the Tigers running the table and against all odds winning the CFP?
We've got individual blue collar fans and middle class fans and well-to-do fans jumping in giving hard earned after tax dollars directly to the players so that the team can compete - are they doing that because it's just a game.
Eli Drinkwitz is making what $6M a year being a coach but hey, it's just a game.
BULLSHYTE.
College football is more important to many fans than most of the rest of the parts of their lives.
You can judge it.
You can deny it.
You can say it shouldn't be that way.
But we Americans love our entertainment and we make it one of the most important things we do.
So given all that, don't tell me that mediocrity in any phase of this thing we spend so much money and time on can be MEDIOCRE because 'it's just a game'.
We want the best team, the best stadium, the best media deal, the best conference and the most wins.
We also want the best calls of the game, it's the essence of the product itself, inseparable from it really.
So don't tell me that some Illinois native who gets off when our opponents get an interception or a fumble recovery but can't seem to muster the appropriate emotion when we do the same is THE BEST WE CAN DO.
He can continue to do whatever it is you think he does for basketball - but we need a new voice for Mizzou Football - someone of the same caliber the St. Louis Cardinals might hire to do baseball games - someone who can naturally embrace the 'homer call' role and really step into it - not looking to move on to FoxSports or something else.
Mike Kelly can't go on forever, whether it's through good judgment or sheer attrition some day we will have a decent homer announcer...
