Those of us who are old enough to remember KMOX when it was great, under Robert F. Hyland, remember the great Jack Buck. He was at the mic for the 1961 MU ku basketball fist fight started by a ku player, for thousands of Cardinal games, lots of MU football games, and after 9/11, at home plate at Busch reading a poem he wrote that put that event in perspective.
He had the ability to do that because of his intellect, his humanity and his gift of the spoken word. And because he was a WW2 hero, who nearly lost his arm from a shrapnel wound while leading a patrol from the 9th Infantry which seized the Bridge at Remagen.
Jack was a gem.
We have had other great announcers - Mahlon Aldridge, Sparky, Harry Carey, Bob Starr, Dan Kelly, Wayne Larivee, Bob Costas, Bill Wilkerson, John Rooney, Hot Rod Kelly, John Kadlec.
The current announcer is none of those things, but is very good at interrupting Howard and Chris Gervino.
