Sure they would have. But that doesn't make him a franchise QB all the sudden.

He was traded with a VERY good CB for a 3rd rounder. He was essentially just released.

No, I don't think Denver would settle for having Alex Smith in the same division playing against Mahomes every year. That sounds like a recipe to lose a lot.
