Alex Smith was an average at best QB.

A guy that was the #1 overall pick and never came close to living up to it. Reid traded for him because he saw potential. Knew KC needed a solid QB to transition to a franchise QB when they could draft one.

Reid got more out of him than anyone else. Pretty much the same for every QB he's coached (except maybe Vick but he was years removed from the NFL).

Alex Smith was experienced and was solid. He was certainly NOT a franchise QB...ever. And he was never treated as such at any of the teams he played for.
