Whether to add Houston or Memphis was a close call, but...

I think Houston won because (in no particular order)...

(1) Despite the Big12 having 3 schools from TX, none of them were in or even near the Houston area.

(2) UH has a massive enrollment and alumni base

(3) UH has strong BB & FB programs, a respected name/brand, and a substantial AD budget.

(4) UH is a natural and historic rival of the TX schools (from the old SWC).

(5) Houston is a cheap & easy travel partner.

(6) Last but not least, I think the Big12 was hoping (or praying) that by adding Houston it might persuade UT & OU to change their mind about leaving (unlikely of course, but UH makes that a possibility IMO, while Memphis does not).
