I don't know him personally, but have watched many interviews with him online. He does smile and laugh periodically. Most of the time he is not smiling just because he is focused on giving serious answers, which makes him come across as less jovial, but I think that's fine, it's just his approach to things.
To me one of the things that stands out about his character is that he doesn't cheat by playing players or lying about other coaches, unlike seemingly the majority of the coaches that have highly ranked teams (and remember MU was ranked as high as 10th this season). Unlike most Power5 coaches, he also doesn't spend all his time talking about winning games, he mixes in talk about winning in life, which to me is what a coach should be doing. I think there are coaches who don't do very much of that.
He has also spoken many times about the importance of helping young men grow and do well with academics, it's clear he gives more than lip service to that, unlike a lot of coaches.
Another indicator of his character is that he won't swear at referees and treats them with dignity. Something we need in all of sports.
Maybe someone who has spent some time talking with him directly can comment more, but he seems to be a quality individual to me, just observing from a distance.
