for his company. He mentioned the schools that they liked hiring from but said that they did like to get a bit of a diversity regarding the pool of schools and the backgrounds and interests of the students as well.
He said that the different perspectives could help prevent overlooked problems. The prime example he mentioned was the space shuttle Challenger fiasco. I don't remember the details but he said that in studying what went wrong afterwards they felt that they had a relatively homogenous group of people working on it who were prone to have the same strengths and weaknesses. They felt that having a greater variance in backgrounds and thought processes would have improved the chances of someone noticing the problem sooner and in being less prone to go along with the crowd if there were perceived problems.
I'm not sure if that's the case, but his company liked to hire people with an assortment of outside interests and hobbies and from a variety of schools even if they tended to have more from some schools than others.
