With only a 4 team playoff, sure the bowls still matter. While fans will be disappointed if the Committee (which I think does a really good job) places them short of the Final 4, there are still great destination bowls. There is no difference between going to a good bowl today, then back then.
I doubt CFB is any less popular today, in fact I'd think the advent of the internet with recruiting sites, teams news, "Tigerboards" and a fair Final 4 has created tons of fans. Merely because attendance is down doesn't mean fandom is. There are many reasons for that, one being cost, another in fact related to the popularity of the sport. I can see tons of games in whole or in part, on any Saturday with a DISH Hopper (which I highly recommend). I follow the game more so today than at any time. And I'm sure I'm not alone.
The Committee (which I know you hate), a bona fide Final 4, GameDays, conference networks, sports bars, the financial distributions, hey, I think the game has done very well keeping its loyalists and creating new fans
The future's so bright, CFB's gotta wear shades
