If people have free access, they would obviously keep self-medicating. There are side effects to opiates or your amphetamines, etc. These aren't health pills. The collateral cost of healthcare would jump astronomically. I'm sure you understand that.

There's never been a simple solution. Throughout mankind, man has found away to get high. Many have legitimate reasons to try to escape reality life is tough. That's one of the reasons that being a devout Christian is helpful. You are encouraged to have endurance, preservation, and to expect suffering. You have more ability to cognitively deal with it because the structure is presented to you if you read the Bible.
