If they purchase/build an item for a $50 cost and sell it for $250, then thats $200 profit.

If they build it for $50, send an invoice for $500, and get paid $250, thats a $200 profit AND a $250 tax write off (more or less, I'm sure its more complicated than that, there's probably some weird IRS formula for the write-off of depreciated goods sold or something like that)
