A lot of companies took the free money covid sales era as the norm and made poor sales estimate decisions based off of that
Mostly in niche industries though, like gaming which has had a ton of layoffs
It's more nuanced and would take more than a tb post to explain but dems pushed those covid checks out like crazy (or people will dieeeee they said). However most people spent that on entertainment or nonsense. Some industries took that to be some new norm in spending and way overdid production in response, only the demand dwindled and they didn't account for it.

It takes two to tango so to speak, it was certainly enabled by government idiocy (especially when states like California kept issuing "free" checks to people even beyond the federal ones)
