You can maximize talent or minimize it, and we currently fall towards the latter and I certainly agree with the observation below we are treating games like a practice/scrimmage. But there is sufficient talent on this roster to do lots of good things.
Problems currently in my opinion are
1. Still just a complete absence of defining roles or rotations. Beyond East, Honor, Carter nobody else remotely has a defined role or knows what to expect or what is expected of them game to game. And Honor/Carter both have roles that they are not well suited for so it’s actually to their detriment.
2. So little ball movement. East lead the team with 2 assists last night and he is a ball dominant guard that seeks his own shot primarily. Everyone over dribbles and there is so much isolation. Honor was rightly praised last year for his assist/turnover ratio but his current role has completely negates that type of contribution. It was such a struggle and so much effort for each MU basket and then scoring for our opponents comes so easily.
3. Inability do control dribble penetration. I’m not sure I recall a team so easy to break down and get in constant scramble mode defensively. Opponents go right by our defenders and cause constant rotations. Some of that is our trapping up top but even when we play straight up players are just constantly penetrating with ease and putting backside defenders in late rotations.
4. Taking the 3s opponents want us to take. There has to be some discipline to pass those shots up and work for something better because there are so many wasted possessions and we don’t make opponents work hard defensively or rarely get to the line.
5. The one area I would agree in terms of lacking talent is an inability to attack the rim. We don’t have any players who can penetrate off the dribble and get to the rim. Not necessarily dunking but by going aggressively towards the rim in a manner that defenses has to collapse and foul to try and prevent against. Coupled with our lack of ball movement/willingness to take 3s it makes us very stagnant in general for long stretches.
