The term 'Final Four' first appeared in 1975 in the Official Basketball Guide in reference to Marquette being one of the 'final four' teams remaining in the prior years tournament. It was around 1978 that it was first attached to the tournament as having a distinct meaning as a marketing concept, and several years after that in 1980 the NCAA trademarked the concept.

So anyone making a 'final four' anytime shortly before 1980 did so only retroactively and without any knowledge that it was a tangible thing to be striving towards.
